Man Arrested at Starbucks Had Been Customer for 8 Years

Man Arrested at Starbucks Had Been Customer for 8 Years

Rashon Nelson says he feared for his life as he and longtime pal Donte Robinson were taken to jail:

Rashon Nelson initially brushed it off when the Starbucks manager told him he couldn’t use the restroom because he wasn’t a paying customer, and when he and his business partner, Donte Robinson, were approached at their table and asked if they needed help. The 23-year-old entrepreneurs declined, explaining they were just waiting for a business meeting. A few minutes later, police walked into the coffee shop and in their direction. “That’s when we knew she called the police on us,” Nelson tells the AP in the men’s first interview since video of their April 12 arrests went viral. Nelson and Robinson, black men who became best friends in the fourth grade, were taken in handcuffs from the Philadelphia Starbucks where Robinson has been a customer since he was 15.

“We were there for a real reason, a real deal that we were working on,” Robinson explains. “We were at a moment that could have a positive impact on a whole ladder of people, lives, families. So I was like, ‘No, you’re not stopping that right now.'” He thought about his loved ones as he was taken to jail; Nelson wondered if he’d make it home alive. The pair spent hours in a jail cell with no outside contact until they were released after midnight, when the DA declined to prosecute them for trespassing. The men are in mediation proceedings with Starbucks to implement changes, including the posting in stores of a customer bill of rights and the adoption of new policies regarding customer ejections. Robinson says he appreciates the support they’ve received but that anger and boycotting Starbucks aren’t the solution. “We need a different type of action. We do want a seat at the table.” More from Nelson and Robinson here.

Time ‘Most Influential’ List Includes Youngest Honoree

Millie Bobby Brown makes cut at age 14; also, Obama writes blurb for Parkland students:

Time is out with its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and the unnumbered list includes President Trump, of course. Ted Cruz wrote the accompanying blurb, explaining that Trump “is a flash-bang grenade thrown into Washington by the forgotten men and women of America.” Sure, he’s ticked off the media and bulldozed right over “blinkered coastal elites,” writes Cruz, and that’s part of the plan. Trump “is doing what he was elected to do: disrupt the status quo. That scares the heck out of those who have controlled Washington for decades, but for millions of Americans, their confusion is great fun to watch.” Other notable picks:

  • Obama on Parkland students: The Florida teens leading the charge on gun laws in the wake of the fatal shooting at their school make the list, with former President Obama writing that blurb. “By bearing witness to carnage, by asking tough questions and demanding real answers, the Parkland students are shaking us out of our complacency,” writes Obama.
Toni Braxton wants a ‘Great Gatsby’-themed wedding with Birdman

Toni Braxton wants a ‘Great Gatsby’-themed wedding with Birdman

Toni Braxton’s upcoming wedding to Birdman will be a celebration to remember.

The 50-year-old R&B legend wants a “Great Gatsby”-themed wedding.

“This is my second wedding, and I’m over 40,” she quipped to People. “It’s like Carrie Bradshaw, the last bride. It’ll be elegant and a little sexy.”

Braxton broke her engagement news in the Season 6 trailer of “Braxton Family Values.”

Rumors have been persistent for years that the singer and the rapper, 49, have been dating but neither would confirm.

“He’s been my bestie for like 15 or 16 years,” she said. Things went from platonic to romantic in 2016 amid her health woes brought on by lupus. “Every day I had a show, he came.”

In January, radio personality Angie Martinez attempted to get some details about their romantic life together. Braxton didn’t budge, but she did offer a tiny glimpse into what the tattoo-covered rapper is like.

“He’s a gentleman,” Braxton said. “He’s such a gentleman. Opening doors … I promise you.”

She also says Birdman, whose real name is Bryan Williams, is “very traditional.”

Jordan Peele combats fake news with Obama PSA

Jordan Peele combats fake news with Obama PSA

Don’t believe everything you see in an internet video.

That’s the message from Jordan Peele and BuzzFeed, which teamed up for a video public-service announcement that puts Peele’s words into the mouth of former President Obama.

The 72-second piece begins as what appears to be a message from former President Barack Obama. Halfway through, it is revealed to be Peele — delivering his famous Obama impression as a voiceover to a digitally manipulated video.

The project emerged from discussions between Peele and BuzzFeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti about fake news, and the importance of media literacy in the era of fake news as technology makes it increasingly easy to disseminate misinformation by manipulating video and audio.

The video, produced by BuzzFeed in collaboration with Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, was distributed Tuesday across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Snapchat. The video was written by Jordan Peele and produced by BuzzFeed’s Jared Sosa.

The video was built using After Effects, a motion-graphics program, and Fakeapp — an artificial-intelligence video-editing program that has been used mainly for superimposing celebrities’ faces onto porn scenes.

BuzzFeed’s Sosa figured out a way to get a semi-accurate camera track on Obama’s head to get a virtual 3D camera. This allowed him to paste Peele’s mouth onto Obama’s. Sosa then used Fakeapp to replace Peele’s mouth with Obama’s; he had Fakeapp run for 12 hours and the synchronization improved dramatically, with the software correcting some of the points where Peele’s mouth weren’t in the right position. He then exported that footage to refine the synthetic jaw and then let Fakeapp run for 48 hours to get a more accurate render of Obama’s mouth.

Usher is the victim of $820K home theft

Usher is the victim of $820K home theft

Usher could be the latest victim of the celebrity bling ring.

Thieves stole about $820,000 in jewelry and cash from the R&B crooner’s home, according to The Blast. Usher’s estranged wife, Grace Miguel, reported the house had been broken into after she learned of the incident from the housekeeper on March 29.

The housekeeper reportedly told Miguel that she “discovered a footprint on the second floor, a handprint on the pillow in the lower floor, and the curtains to the lower floor window were open.” She went to look at the security footage to check if anyone could be seen but “noticed that the recording box was missing and connecting wires were cut.”

When Miguel arrived at the house, which is currently on the market to sell, she confirmed some of Usher’s jewelry had been stolen, as well as $20,000 in cash.

The thieves stole six watches, the most expensive of which cost $220,000, and a rose gold Jesus necklace worth $200,000.

Kanye West shares memory of Lamar amid Khloé’s drama

Kanye West shares memory of Lamar amid Khloé’s drama

Kanye West may be missing his former brother-in-law Lamar Odom.

On Sunday night, in an unexpected return to Twitter, West, 40, shared a fond memory of Odom.

“My favorite moment of walking into MSG to play ‘Saint Pablo,’ I used to go to the hospital and play Lamar the album when he was learning to walk and talk again,” he tweeted. “Then we walked into the arena together.”

West attached a snap of himself and Odom, 38, at Madison Square Garden during his Yeezy Season 3 fashion show in February 2016.

The moment was major given it was one of the first times anyone saw Odom since his near-fatal overdose at a brothel months earlier.

Odom and then-estranged wife Khloé Kardashian were also inseparable that weekend in 2016. Kardashian, 33, and Odom officially divorced in December 2016.

Now, Kardashian is with Tristan Thompson, with whom she recently welcomed a baby girl. Despite the birth news, Thompson’s cheating ways may have overshadowed it all.
‘Full Metal Jacket’ actor R. Lee Ermey dead at 74

‘Full Metal Jacket’ actor R. Lee Ermey dead at 74

R. Lee Ermey — the foul-mouthed drill sergeant from “Full Metal Jacket” — died Sunday from complications of pneumonia.

He was 74.

“It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (‘The Gunny’) passed away this morning,” his manager, Bill Rogers, announced in a statement.

“Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.”

Ermey, a Kansas native, spent 11 years in the US Marine Corps as a staff sergeant and honorary gunnery sergeant before eventually gracing the silver screen in “Full Metal Jacket.”

Uttering infamous lines such as “What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?” and “Five-foot-nine, I didn’t know they stacked s–t that high!,” Ermey became one of the world’s most iconic drill instructors following the film’s 1987 release.

He had been hired as a technical adviser for the role of gunnery sergeant, but managed to impress director Stanley Kubrick with his suggested dialogue and work behind the scenes.

“They had already hired another actor to play Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, but Marines don’t just say ‘Oh’ and give up,” Ermey told DoD News in 2009. “We continue to march and we attack until we achieve our goal and we accomplish our mission.”

The Vietnam War vet convinced Kubrick to give him the role and was later able to earn a Supporting Actor nomination at the Golden Globes for his work.

“I read once that the only 2 actors Stanley Kubrick ever allowed to improvise dialogue were Peter Sellers & R. Lee Ermey and we are all the better for it,” tweeted John Fugelsang. “Thank you Gunny.”

Ermey had more than 60 film credits over the span of his acting career, including parts in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” “Mississippi Burning” and “Toy Story.”

But it was his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman that made him a household name with gun lovers and members of the military.

The legendary actor went on to host a number of television shows, including “Mail Call” and “Lock N’ Load with R. Lee Ermey” — both of which aired on the History Channel.

He most recently hosted the Outdoor Channel program “Gunny Time.”

Donald Glover set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’

Donald Glover set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’

Golden Globe-winning actor Donald Glover is on double duty on May 5 as host and musical guest of “Saturday Night Live.”

The news was announced during the John Mulaney-hosted episode of the late-night show. Glover will bring his brand of comedy on the sketch side of things while his hip-hop persona, Childish Gambino, will take the stage as the musical guest.

The news comes at a prime time for Glover, who is on a roll with his surreal FX comedy “Atlanta” (specifically the recent “Teddy Perkins” episode, which will haunt you long after you watch it). He also stars in the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story” movie, which will premiere at Cannes in May.

His “SNL” hosting gig is an NBC homecoming for Glover. He was a writer for and appeared in episodes of “30 Rock” and starred in the cult comedy “Community.”

Mark your calendars! May 5!!!! #SNL pic.twitter.com/vKDX4gQJlX
